Beers with aroma and flavour are back in vogue, according to Roger Protz, editor of the Good Beer Guide 2006.
The guide, out this week, lists newly created micro-breweries in the UK, indicating that the real ale market is in resurgence.
“Beer lovers are tired of over-hyped national brands and avoid like the plague the bland apologies for lager and the cold, tasteless keg beers produced by global brewers,” said Protz.
“Most significantly, ACNielsen now supports what Camra and the Good Beer Guide have argued for years: that if the cask beer production figures of the four global brewers - Scottish & Newcastle, InBev, Coors and Carlsberg - are stripped out, the regionals and the micros can be seen to be in growth.”
The guide lists details of the growth of the regional brewing sector, including those with a strong off-trade presence such as Fuller’s, Adnams, Charles Wells and Young’s.
Two Czech beers are set to enter the UK through Grayrose Trading. Holba and Zubr will be available in three varieties - Serak, Premium and Classic.

Summer Lightning, the real ale brewed by Wiltshire’s Hop Back Brewery, is entering the off-trade. The 5% abv golden ale has long been available as a cask ale and will now be on sale as a bottle-conditioned ale at Harvey Nichols.

Fuller Smith & Turner’s 2005 bottle-conditioned 8.5% abv Vintage Ale will be available in supermarkets next month.

Vertical Drinks is now distributing the 2004 Tesco Beer Challenge Winner - Weissbier Etalon - a wheat beer from the Ukraine.

Dom Perignon has launched its 1998 vintage (rsp: £78.99), which will be on sale at Tesco, Sainsbury, Oddbins, Majestic and Thresher.

Cocktail liqueur range De Kuyper, distributed by First Drinks Brands, is launching a new variant, De Kuyper Sour Apple (rsp: £9.49).
