Phil Clarke entered Tesco and amongst other things talked about the need to invest in stores in terms of payroll due to step change crippling stores. It was the most sense I'd heard in so long. If you want to give Waitrose style service, ensure there are people around who will give the customer the time of day. Then came ideal schedules which stripped it all back out again and more, and now this. I can imagine how difficult it would be to run this company, especially with the share price tumbling as it is and trying to regain the city's faith in Tesco, but currently the wrong man is in the job. There is no logic to their statement reference improving service. It will do quite the opposite. I'd have more respect for him if he just said the truth. That he's run out of ideas to "save" Tesco. Give me a call Phil if you want some ideas. Not one of them would include crippling morale in stores!
