While I have no doubt that we could export more from the UK, it is important to recognise that not all imports can be replaced by products made here because they are specialities such as Continental cheeses, which as a nation we have always enjoyed. And why not? Other imports such as apples extend the season so that we can enjoy the freshest apples all the year round rather than having to eat produce stored over the Winter instead of new seasons' crispy imports from the Southern hemisphere which encourage people to eat apples all the year round and maintain interest in UK produce in the Autumn. There in nothing more delicious than a fresh English apple in season with a piece of English cheddar but customers should be allowed to continue to have the choice. They are the customers, not the politicians who keep banging on about how we should only eat British because it is British and not necessarily because it is the best. Finally, we need to be willing to accept other countries' exports in order to encourage them to accept ours. If we as the British can be seen to enjoy the best for ourselves, that can only enhance the value of our own products in the eyes of would-be customers abroad.
