I’m sure every team leader is wondering about protected pay, so am i. it one of the key things i have to base my decisions on.

Well i did a few sums and for myself, i.e. 36 been with company 9 years it would cost the company £3,439.18 in the first year to protect my pay, with it being a total of £8,597.94 for the four years.

Redundancy will cost them at the legal min £3,088.56

Now i know protected pay is supposed to be part of my T&C's but what am i going to do if they don't honour it, quit?

So what do you think will happen?

USDAW going to be effective in making sure it cost the company more to keep my “rights”?

If my pay isn’t protected my USDAW membership will be the first thing to go.

Now i have no idea if Tesco will actually role this out, if all team leader roles will truly be affected or if protected pay will be not offered. I’m just making an educated guess.

All i would say is it’s up to you to shop elsewhere but isn’t you cutting your nose off to spite your face, sure if it’s cheaper and saves you money then go for it.

I only hope the people who are evaluating theses “pilots” or trials are taking good note, because if this fails like i feel idea schedules failed guess whose head will be next on the block. . .

We can all gripe about everyone at our store or our board of directors but at the end of the day we need to focus on our own jobs. Our morale is all we can control at the moment, i say work hard do your best, hope this is just a cruel dream for those of us who aren’t facing it today like these trial stores and know if the worse does come we have an idea of what we will do, be jump ship to the express format, a competitor or even something completely different.

It’s going to be a really rough ride for those that stay from the C.A to Store manager, you think the company will admit a restructure has failed or just blame those that remain there not doing their jobs. . .

Dark times and from a company who need to know the most important thing might be the customer but your staff is the most important tool and resource, so please don’t forget that or Tesco will be lucky not to slip further away from the position it’s so ruthlessly seeking.
