Morrisons had a few big problems when it took over Safeway. Firstly, it was taking over a much larger chain that was based all across the UK, and it was a regional, northern-based company with different demographics and company ethos. That is not a dig by the way, I'm a northerner and we are not the flat-capped stereotypes the media portrays us as.

And, although there were problems with Safeway's performance by the late 1990s, they may have survived if somebody in a similar mould to the late Alistair Grant had been at the helm. But a merger with Asda, as mooted in 1997/1998 might have been better, at least Walmart would havd
