Fabulous insights into Tesco and how best to shape the grocery sector in the future from Tim Mason. I think the root cause of the failure of the Fresh & Easy neighbourhood C-store concept in the US was two-fold, namely (i) it was ahead of its' time in that there were not as yet sufficient numbers of shoppers seeking a healthier shop without the Wholefoods "whole paycheck" price tag and (ii) it needed to be more vertically integrated with farms & small finished food & drink producers. The marketplace both here and in the US is crying out for healthier convenience food especially in more ethnic minority neighbourhoods. Advances in food tech and logistics since Fresh & Easy closed it's doors suggest that supply costs may not be as prohibitive as before.
