But this only tells part of the story. Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and Asda have all elevated their ‘Stock local/British’ programmes and in the case of Tesco and Sainsbury’s their future brands programmes. The culling of these counters is not good news, I agree, but if it widens the landing strip for new, entrepreneurial brand across all categories, not just fresh meats/fish/deli then it’s good news.

A hyper competitive multiple retail sector is good news given the current economic climate.

And a spin off may well be the resurgence of local butchers and fishmongers as local increasingly becomes the new urban as a consequence of our new working patterns and shopping behaviour. On the contrary it could well lead to a a resurgence in artisan and local with smaller businesses and farm shops the winners.
