Sainsbury has moved quickly to appoint a new chief financial officer following analysts’ predictions that it would announce an appointment this week, as reported in TheGrocer.co.uk’s email alert this morning.

The company has appointed Darren Shapland as chief financial officer.

Shapland was previously group finance director at Carpetright where he worked since 2002. Prior to this he was finance director for Superdrug Stores.

Shapland replaces Roger Matthews who announced he was leaving Sainbury in October 2004.

Justin King, chief executive, said: “I’m delighted that Darren will be joining Sainsbury. He has excellent experience in the retail sector and has undertaken a number of hands-on and broad financial roles. “

Shapland said: “I believe the Sainsbury brand has great potential and look forward to being able to play a key role in the company’s future plans.”
