Sainsbury’s is offering customers on its Nectar scheme the chance to win the equivalent of a year’s shopping in loyalty points, with the launch of a new nine-day promotion.
During the ‘The Big Points Bonanza’, which will run from 27 January to 4 February, 50 million Nectar loyalty points will be available for customers to win via a series of giveaways or through shopping in-store.
Throughout the nine days, customers can sign up to a prize draw in which 50 will win one million Nectar points each. This is equivalent to £5,000 worth of shopping – enough to cover one year’s worth of groceries, Sainsbury’s said.
A further 45 customers will win a surprise 10,000 points – the equivalent of up to £50 – when they shop instore, online or via Sainsbury’s SmartShop app. There will be five winners in total each day.
On the final day of the promotion, every Nectar customer will be given a printed coupon, worth from 50 to 5,000 Nectar points, when they spend more than £20 in store.
“As our customers look for more ways to save money, we want to be able to provide great value and exciting offers for them,” said Sainsbury’s director of Nectar and loyalty Sam Burston. “We want to help them to get the most out of their shopping, which is why we’ve launched The Big Points Bonanza.”
Sainsbury’s founded Nectar in 2002, making it one of the UK’s longest-running coalition loyalty programmes. Customers can earn points when buying groceries, holidays or petrol in-store or online at Sainsbury’s, which can then be redeemed through money off future purchases or donated to select charities.
British Airways, The Woodland Trust, Esso and Dulux Decorator Centres are among the 300 other retailers signed up to the scheme.
Basket data from the scheme can provide insight into the trends driving the buying choices of the supermarket’s 17.6 million Nectar members. The latest yearly figures released by Sainsbury’s in January showed that vegan food, bananas and low & no alcohol drinks were among the most popular items purchased by Nectar members in 2022.
