Global Brands has taken on a tequila-free version of Salitos beer, the brand which pulled out of the UK eight months after launch.

The 4.7% abv Salitos Imported Cerveza Especial is the first time the tequila-free brew has been available in the UK. Global Brands said it was positive about the prospects of the South American drink.

"Salitos is a light and refreshing premium lager with the sort of crisp, clean taste that is very popular at the moment," said beer brands director John Harley.

Salitos with tequila was launched in the UK in February by distributor Navson but it pulled out last month due to poor sales. The European craze for beer with an added shot of tequila failed to take off here, the company said.

But Global Brands believes the failure of the brand's tequila variant in the UK won't affect sales of the standard beer. "This is a fantastic time to launch this type of beer in the UK market and a great opportunity," said Harley.
