People can recover just as quickly from sporting activities by drinking skimmed milk as they can sports drinks, a study has claimed.

Milk was very good at rehydrating the body, said the study in the European Journal of Applied Physiology. The research examined how skimmed milk and a carbohydrate-electrolyte solution affected male volunteers immediately after exercise, and how able they were to exercise four hours later.

It found that while subjects were rehydrated by both types of drink, skimmed milk also ensured they were in a positive fluid balance at the end of the recovery.
