Spar UK has recruited Booker's trading director Peter Miller to fill the newly-created post of group trading director.
Miller will take responsibility for all Spar's trading activities and divisions and will report directly to Spar UK managing director Jerry Marwood.
Miller spent 14 years with Booker, joining as group buyer for beers, wines and spirits after two years with Spar where he managed the off-licence sections of Spar and Consort Cash and Carry,
He was promoted to deputy trading director in 1994 and then director of retail trading, overseeing grocery, beers, wines and spirits, tobacco and confectionery.
In 1998 he became group buying director as well as a non-executive director of Booker Foodservice. He has also worked as director of trading for grocery at Booker.
He was seconded to Iceland in March last year where he worked on a project to integrate Booker's buying systems into the frozen food chain's operations.
Marwood said: "Peter is one of the most experienced traders in the business.We are certain we have the person who, with our trading team, will catapult the trading function onto a new level of achievement."
