Architecture and conservation have been brought together in a farm shop at a Somerset arts centre.

Durslade Farm Shop is located on the site of Hauser & Wirth gallery, which is a mixture of new and converted farm buildings on Durslade Farm in Bruton.

Also on site are Durslade Farmhouse, which can be rented out, and Roth Bar & Grill restaurant. Both are operated by hospitality firm Artfarm, which also runs the farm shop.

Moxon Architects worked with the architect for the wider site, Luis Laplace, to develop the farm shop as “contemporary interpretation of a traditional agricultural building”. Materials were selected to complement the existing buildings, with substantial use of timber due to it being sustainable and economical.

“This is our sixth completed scheme for the client [Artfarm], and one where we have been able to showcase our shared enthusiasm of local sourcing and material provenance,” says Moxon MD Ben Addy.

“This modest building performs a simple function in a straightforward and flexible manner. However, the use of recycled materials combined with precision detailing and fabrication ensures a comfortable and relaxed fit with the beautifully restored buildings of Durslade Farm.”

Artfarm also operates sites including the Fife Arms coaching inn in the Scottish Highlands and Manuela, a restaurant in a former flour mill in downtown Los Angeles.
