French group Carrefour plans to make its range of own label basic groceries the “cheapest products in the whole market" across Europe this year.

Speaking at an industry conference in Madrid, Carrefour’s chief executive, Daniel Bernard said the group was looking to ramp up its discounts to put more emphasis on boosting sales volumes “versus additional margin points”.

The price roll-backs will be seen across Carrefour’s European supermarkets and hypermarkets with particular emphasis on Spain, France, Belgium, Italy, Greece and Poland.

The conference organised by Deutsche Bank was attended by senior executives at Sainsbury and Tesco from the UK, the US’ Wal-Mart, Metro from Germany and Casino in France.
