SIR; re ‘Publishers failing smaller retailers’ (The Grocer, July 19, p10). Many ANR members would support the views expressed by Ian Duncan-Lewis.

Indeed one of our multiple retailers states: “Our experience is that it is impossible to stop a title, it is almost impossible to increase the quantity of a title and the news house will add titles as they see fit!”

It is true that many retailers find themselves in the position of having to accept the supplies ‘dumped’ on them rather than the supplies they want, as this system best serves the publishers who are motivated by advertising revenues and not just copy sales. A cynic might say this helps maintain higher ABC figures.

Many ANR members say they “find the whole category hard to manage”. If the distribution system does not become more demand-led, and if the category does not become as manageable as other categories, then more and more retailers will reduce the space allocated to magazines in favour of more profitable categories.
