The Competition Commission will force Tesco to sell a controversial former Co-op store in Slough after concluding it had reduced competition in the area.
Tesco also owns a 100,000sq ft superstore in the area, which is less than a mile away from the former Co-Op site.
The commission will now appoint a "divestment trustee" to oversee bids for the site and ensure the sale is carried out objectively.
Its preferred option is for another big supermarket to buy the site and build its own giant store to compete with the existing Tesco store in the town.
Tesco had actually begun developing at the site, before the commission ordered it to stop in August.
