Rivals in the Irish market are cashing in on the disappearance of several popular brands from Tesco shelves as the company sources more products in the UK.

Superquinn has gone public in acknowledging that it now stocks many of the products no longer available at Tesco, and reports a strong consumer response. "We can't really win the price war against a company the size of Tesco," said trading director James Wilson, "but we can win on range and offer products it has delisted."

Superquinn flagged up a variety of brands no longer stocked in the 119 Tesco stores across the Republic, ranging from Flahavan's muesli and Glenisk organic yoghurt to Italy's bestselling pasta, De Cecco, and Linda McCartney foods. Trade sources suggest some lines have been delisted because suppliers failed to meet Tesco price demands.
