Own-label wines starred at this year's International Wine Challenge, the event's organisers said.

Tesco and Marks & Spencer were joint winners, each with 62 own-label wines picking up IWC awards and M&S claiming five gold medals. Sainsbury's and Asda were hot in their heels with 59 and 56 awards respectively. Waitrose lagged behind with just 18 awards.

"The lower-priced wines from supermarkets are doing really well," said IWC event director Chris Ashton. "It shows their buying teams are working successfully to find high-quality wines at low prices.

"A lot of these winning wines are under a tenner. It shows there is fantastic wine buying going on."

The IWC recorded a 15% increase in the number of wines judged this year.

Cornish winery Camel Valley won a gold medal for the second year in a row.
