Tesco is believed to be planning an announcement about its plans for the US in December, according to industry sources.
The company has been eyeing Wal-Mart’s homeland for some time. In May, The Grocer revealed that former trading director for grocery Colin Smith had been scouting around for two months (The Grocer, May 7, p4). And at its half-year results in September, chief executive Sir Terry Leahy confirmed it had been looking at the US market. He ruled out an approach for US number two grocery retailer Albertsons, which this week received a preliminary bid from Kroger, the US number one food chain, reports in the US said.
Tesco is thought to be looking at a smaller scale entry in order to establish a foothold.
