Tesco has opened its largest store in Scotland and its first to offer self-scan checkouts north of the border.

Tesco Extra in Cumbernauld will compete with a nearby Asda to offer shoppers a 24-hour service.

Meanwhile, Asda has won approval by 13 votes to 12 to open a superstore in Dundee, despite objections from local residents and from Tesco - which also has plans to open in the town.

But the decision to approve the application will be referred to the Scottish Executive, as the local council owns the land it will be selling to Asda for the project.
