Tesco is aiming to boost availability by developing a colour-coded packaging system with the British Frozen Food Federation to help its staff locate frozen food stocks.
“Freezers are empty, but staff are not able to quickly identify foods at the back of store,” said BFFF director general Alf Carr. “According to our figures, non-availability reduces industry turnover by 7%-10%.”
Carr said Tesco was the first retailer to seriously address the problem, but several suppliers had raised concerns.
“There’s bound to be concern unless we can standardise the system,” said Carr. “The most efficient answer would be a standard involving all retailers.”
