Tesco is targeting one of the last remaining postcode areas in the UK without one of its stores.

The supermarket is looking at prospective sites in Orkney and Shetland, which, along with the Outer Hebrides and Harrogate, are the only postcode districts without a Tesco.

Shetland's internet forum Shetlink has carried out an internet poll in which 53% of people said they wanted to see Tesco open while 39% were opposed.

Tesco said it had no firm plans as yet but was keen to pursue a store on Shetland.

It added that it was overwhelmed at the response received regarding its interest in the islands.
