Store managers were acknowledged for their efforts in boosting sales of fresh produce for the Co-operative Group.

The retailer held its second Pride in Produce event which is designed to encourage staff to concentrate on selling fresh produce without worrying about waste.

By stores taking pride in the category and maintaining a credible range, sales had increased and waste levels were being reduced, the Co-op said. More than 300 store managers and head office staff took part in a day of activity, with an awards ceremony in the evening. Eight regional winners each received £2,000 in Co-op shopping vouchers.

The retailer also recognised suppliers’ services. T&JB Produce won a Lifetime Achievement Award after supplying the group for 35 years. Alex Payce-Drury, head of buying for fresh produce, said: “We are delighted with the Pride in Produce initiative.”
