East of England Co-operative Society has reported a record festive period, with sales of £7.5m in the week leading up to Christmas.

Like-for-likes rose 2% in the four weeks over Christmas and New Year, with total turnover up 1% in the eight weeks to 7 January.

The society’s ‘Sourced Locally’ range sold especially well, the society said. It shifted 39 tonnes of Fairfield Farm potatoes, 9,000 packs of Havensfield eggs and 4,500 bottles of Nethergate Brewery ale in the final two weeks of December.

“The four week sales over Christmas and New Year have been exceptional, products have been flying off the shelves and our promotional activity has hit the right note,” said Roger Grosvenor, group general manager for trading.

“All in all, it has been a result beyond our expectations and I would like to say a big thankyou to all our colleagues in stores, depots and service departments.”
