Aldi has claimed its third successive victory in our seven-way ‘Super’ Grocer 33 price comparison survey.
Aldi’s £54.82 total was 39p cheaper year on year, and offered the lowest price for 23 items. It was exclusively cheapest for the blueberries and frozen king prawns.
Lidl’s basket offered the lowest price on 22 items. It was exclusively cheapest for the dishwasher cleaner.
There was a big gap between the discounters and traditional supermarkets. However, just 26p separated Morrisons, Tesco and Asda. At £62.18, third-placed Morrisons was £7.36 pricier than Aldi and cheapest for 10 items – exclusively so for the pears and Viakal limescale remover – and the basket was £2.56 cheaper year on year.
Our basket was skewed towards own brand items this week due to the discounters. This led to lower savings than usual from loyalty promotions.
Clubcard members saved £2.74 at Tesco this week. That helped reduce its basket year on year by £1.38 to £62.34. And it was exclusively cheapest for the chicken and pork pies. But it came in £7.52 more than Aldi.
Asda, which last week unveiled a major programme of Rollback price cuts, could only manage fifth place, with its £62.44 total £7.62 more than Aldi’s. It was cheapest for 12 items and exclusively so for the Stella Artois, Sure deodorant and butternut squash.
Sainsbury’s was well off the pace. While it was exclusively cheapest for the mint sauce its £66.82 total was £3.72 (5.6%) higher year on year – and £12 more expensive than Aldi – with just £1 of Nectar Prices savings.
As to Waitrose the gap on its £79.22 total was £24.40 to Aldi. And it only matched the lowest price on one item: the Birds Eye garden peas.
