Asda claimed a second win in a row on the back of some deep discounts this week.
At £53.45, the Walmart-owned retailer came in £2.16 cheaper than Sainsbury’s which continues to be its closest challenger.
Asda offered the lowest price for 24 of the 33 items on our shopping list with 11 of these exclusively cheapest. It had 12 products on deal this week, with seven of these price-only promotions. The Chicago Town pizza was reduced from £2 to £1.25, the Galaxy chocolate down to £2.50 from £4 and the Flora Buttery spread had been reduced from £1.99 to £1.
Sainsbury’s offered the lowest price for 14 lines this week and was exclusively cheapest on four. These were the breaded ham, Coleman’s chicken chasseur mix, the Jordans Country Crisp cereal and the Knorr savoury seasoning. Sainsbury’s carried seven deals this week, all of which were price-only.
Tesco came in a distant third this week. At £59.99 it was £6.54 more expensive than Asda. It offered the lowest price for 13 lines and was exclusively cheapest for the Herta Frankfurters and the tagliatelle. Of its 11 promotions five were price-only and six multibuys.
Morrisons came in £6.95 more expensive than Asda at £60.40. It was cheaper than any of its rivals for the Chicago Town pizza and organic mixed eggs. However, Morrisons was also the retailer most impacted by inflation. The same basket at Morrisons would have been 0.6% cheaper a year ago and 9.1% cheaper last month. Like Asda it also had 12 offers - although five were price-only and seven were multibuys.
Waitrose was a long way adrift of its rivals this week. Its £68.30 total was almost £15 more expensive than Asda. It matched the lowest price for six lines but was not exclusively cheapest on any of them.
