Asda made a swift return to the winner’s enclosure, having been ousted by Tesco last week - but this week shows it is still under pressure as a resurgent Tesco sharpens up on price under new CEO Charles Wilson.
With a total price of £55.36, Asda was £1.53 cheaper than Tesco. However, after factoring in a £1.15 instant discount as part of the latter’s Brand Guarantee initiative, the difference between the two retailers was reduced to just 38p.
Asda offered the lowest price for 20 items, with eight of these exclusively cheapest. These products ranged from the avocados to the milk and Quorn fillets, while it was a combined £1.51 cheaper than Tesco for the Milano salami, premium beefburgers and Schär ciabatta rolls.
That Tesco was breathing down its neck also meant that Asda had to offer our shopper a hefty voucher worth £5.45 off her next shop.
Tesco offered the lowest price for 12 products and was selling the aubergines, Douwe Egberts coffee, pains au chocolat and Young’s basa fillets cheaper than any retailer.
Tesco was also the retailer to offer the most deals. This week it had 11 items on promotion compared with Asda and Morrisons on eight, Waitrose seven and Sainsbury’s three.
Sainsbury’s recent price reductions also seem to be having an impact. It claimed third spot this week. At £57.58 it was £2.22 more expensive than Asda, a difference of just 4%.
Morrisons was £3.83 more expensive than Asda at £59.19. Although it had the cheapest price for 11 products and five exclusively cheapest lines - it lost out due to being £1 more expensive than Asda on the burger and almost a pound dearer on the pineapple chunks.
Waitrose was £8.79 more expensive than Asda at £64.15. It was cheapest for just four lines but not exclusively on any.
