Asda bagged a second Grocer 33 win in three weeks as it prepares to launch a major Rollback pricing initiative.
Ahead of Asda scrapping its Aldi and Lidl Price Match initiative and returning to its classic Rollback strategy this week, it came in £2.02 cheaper than runner-up Morrisons at £69.24.
Asda took the win despite the basket being 2.7% more expensive than in January 2024 – the highest level of inflation of any of our retailers this time out. It was cheapest for 19 items and exclusively so for 13, including the Alpen muesli, bananas, Cravendale milk and Nando’s chilli jam.
Morrisons was cheapest for nine items and exclusively so for five including the wholemeal baps, Kopparberg cider and little gem lettuce. It was the only retailer cheaper than 12 months ago, down 0.4% year on year.
Sainsbury’s prices were up 2.5% year on year, and despite a £4.80 instant discount for Nectar cardholders, was £2.17 more expensive than Asda. It was cheapest for seven items, and exclusively so for the brioche rolls, fish pie and Fox’s Rocky bars.
Tesco’s Clubcard holders received only £2.35 in savings on this week’s basket. At £72.02, it was £2.78 dearer than Asda. Tesco was cheapest for eight items, and exclusively so for four.
Waitrose was carrying the most deals, with 10 promotions this week and also offered the biggest savings from promotions (£6.90). It was also just 0.4% pricier year on year.
However, the price gap to its rivals was as big as ever: it came in £15.16 more expensive than Asda at £84.40 and only managed to match the lowest price for four products: the cheddar, the John West tuna, the Merchant Gourmet rice and quinoa and the Quorn picnic eggs. And none were exclusively cheapest.
