Asda came out cheapest for our special ‘Green 33’ sustainability-themed shopping list.
All the products this week were chosen based on having at least one key eco-friendly attribute such as being organic, plant-based or coming in either easy to recycle or reduced packaging.
At £87.09, Asda – whose trolley fell 1.5% in price year on year – came in £5.79 cheaper than runner-up Morrisons, offering the lowest price for 21 products, with 11 exclusively cheapest including the organic avocados, free-range chipolatas, Ecover fabric softener and rechargeable batteries.
Morrisons offered the lowest price for 14 lines and was exclusively cheapest for eight, including the Cif Eco Refill kitchen spray, Flora spread, Hellmann’s vegan mayonnaise and organic cherry tomatoes.
Sainsbury’s was £7.42 more expensive than Asda at £94.51, offering the lowest price for seven items and exclusively cheapest on the organic Gala apples and Fairtrade bananas.
At 96.64 Tesco was over £9 more expensive than Asda based on shelf-edge prices, and only £3 cheaper than Waitrose. However, its deals for loyalty scheme members made a big difference this week: with a massive 14 products included in the Clubcard Prices initiative, Tesco shoppers using a Clubcard would have had a further £8.93 deducted from their bill, meaning Tesco’s total would shift down to £87.71, moving it comfortably into second place – just 62p more expensive than Asda.
While Waitrose came in £12.27 more expensive than Asda, it did offer the lowest price for six products and was exclusively cheapest for the Innocent Blue Spark smoothie and This Isn’t Bacon rashers.
Annual inflation was highest on the Innocent smoothie bottle (29.5%) and fell the most on the Cif kitchen spray (–12.5%).
