Asda was exclusively cheapest for the Schweppes soda water, at £1.22

Asda claimed its first Grocer 33 pricing win since late November amid a deal-heavy blitz across the board this week.

The Leeds-based grocer, which announced a major leadership shake-up this week (p54), was £1.34 cheaper than runner-up Tesco at £66.56.

Asda offered the lowest price for 18 items and was exclusively cheapest for eight, including the Cif cream, Schweppes soda water, Sharwood’s curry sauce and tomatoes. Asda had deals on 14 items, resulting in savings of £6.03 – a 9.1% discount. But annual inflation was 7.2% – higher than any of its rivals.

Despite only running nine deals, Tesco offered savings worth £7.55 (or 11.1%) to Clubcard holders and was the only retailer whose basket was cheaper than last year (–£1.29/1.9%). It was also £6.35 (9.4%) cheaper than last month.

Overall inflation was running at 3% year on year, despite prices falling 2.7% compared with last month.

Morrisons, which along with Waitrose had 16 deals this week, was £2.95 more expensive than Asda at £69.51. It was cheapest for a dozen items but only exclusively so for the Birds Eye fish fingers and the kiwifruit.

Sainsbury’s was running eight promotions for Nectar members, resulting in a saving of £4.62. But it was £5.08 more expensive than Asda at £71.64 and was only exclusively cheapest for the mushrooms.

Guest retailer Iceland was exclusively cheapest for the cheesecake and eggs. But 13 of its 15 deals were multibuys. If you factor in the unit price of these items it was much more competitive than the £5.42 gap vs Asda.

Waitrose was well off the pace despite running 16 promos – the most of any retailer this week. At £78.71 it was £12.15 pricier than Asda. It was cheapest for five items, but none exclusively.
