Asda was exclusively cheapest on Nik Naks and nine further products

Asda claimed a second successive Grocer 33 pricing win as its rivals’ loyalty prices had little impact this week.

The Leeds-based supermarket came in £1.76 cheaper than runner-up Morrisons at £78.91. Asda offered the lowest price for 17 items and was exclusively cheapest for nine. These included the beetroot, Cauldron falafels, Nik Naks and margherita pizza.

Asda was offering savings of 7.7% this week from seven price-only deals, saving its customers £6.07 compared to the pre-promotion prices. These helped the retailer come in 0.7% cheaper than this time last year.

Morrisons was also 0.7% cheaper than a year ago. This was even without any More Card prices. It was carrying five regular discount deals which saved shoppers £4.83, and was cheapest for 10 items, with four exclusively so. These were the diced beef, Heinz ketchup, shiitake mushrooms and Starbucks Frappuccino.

Sainsbury’s and Tesco were the only retailers to charge more than this time a year ago. Sainsbury’s, which was charging 1% more year on year, came in £2.78 more expensive than Asda at £81.69. This was despite offering £3.75 of Nectar Price savings and being exclusively cheapest for seven items. These included the Yorkshire tea, pancakes and organic broccoli.

Tesco’s basket was 2.6% more expensive than September 2023. Clubcard holders saved just £2.06 after factoring in its loyalty prices, and it was only exclusively cheapest for the Viakal limescale remover. This left Tesco languishing in fourth place, at £5.82 more expensive than Asda.

Our shopping was 3.9% cheaper at Waitrose than a year ago. While more competitive than in recent weeks, the upmarket supermarket was still £9.63 more expensive than Asda at £88.54.
