It was a case of the joy of six this week for Asda as it maintained its recent stranglehold on the Grocer 33 pricing survey.
At £73.65, the Walmart-owned supermarket claimed a sixth consecutive pricing win as it undercut nearest rival Sainsbury’s by £2.61.
Asda offered the lowest price for 22 products with 13 exclusively cheapest including the sausages, chicken thighs, Belvita biscuits and Twinings green tea. However, the product that made the biggest difference was the Guinness draught four-pack: at £4 it was at least 75p cheaper than the other retailers.
Though Asda’s total was 4.3% dearer than a month ago, it was actually 2.3% cheaper than this time last year, a further sign that it is not using the coronavirus crisis to put prices up.
Similarly, Sainsbury’s was 2.1% cheaper than a year ago. It offered the lowest price for 10 lines and was exclusively cheapest on the Bio-tiful kefir and Green Giant hearts of palm.
The UK’s biggest grocer Tesco claimed third spot this week. Its £77.78 total was £4.13 more expensive than Asda. It offered the lowest price for eight items and was exclusively cheapest on the carrots, Garnier cleansing water and cabbage.
Morrisons came in £6.89 more expensive than Asda at £80.54. Its total was skewed by a much higher price than its rivals for the Ariel laundry pods. At £12, Morrisons was charging £3.50 more than Asda and Sainsbury’s, and £3 more than Tesco and Waitrose.
Aside from this, Morrisons offered the lowest price for 11 items and was exclusively cheapest on four. It also had the most promotions with 12 deals compared with Asda’s 11, Tesco’s six, Sainsbury’s five and just one at Waitrose.
Waitrose was a long way adrift of rivals this week. At £90.82 it was £17.17 more expensive than Asda.
