It was another win for Asda in the penultimate week of the Grocer 33 year, albeit with a very narrow victory margin.

The Walmart-owned retailer’s £55.05 total was just 18p cheaper than Sainsbury’s this week. This was despite Asda offering the lowest price for 22 items, 11 of which exclusively so. The majority of these were own label and fresh lines such as the pork sausages, wafer thin ham, fresh mint and pak choi.

Asda’s win also came despite its basket being 3.8% more expensive than a month ago, the biggest month-on-month jump of any of the retailers.

By contrast, Sainsbury’s basket was 5.2% cheaper than last month. It offered the lowest price for 14 items and was exclusively cheapest for the Alpen muesli, Green Giant hearts of palm and Warburtons crumpets.

The difference compared with last month was largely down to 11 promotions - all of which were reduced price deals. These included a 95p saving on the Alpen and a £1.50 saving on the bottle of rioja, both of which meant they were significantly cheaper than Asda.

Morrisons came third this week. Its £57.31 total was £2.26 more expensive than Asda. Like Sainsbury’s it offered the lowest price for 14 lines and it was exclusively cheapest for the Linda McCartney’s sausage rolls and Rose’s marmalade.

As in recent weeks, the Bradford-based retailer was carrying the most promotions with 14. However nine of these were multibuy offers.

Tesco came in £4.47 more expensive than Asda this week at £59.52. It had the cheapest price for 11 products, but none exclusively so.

Waitrose remained an outlier on price. Its £65.53 total was over a tenner more expensive than Asda. However a third-off deal did make it the cheapest on the Mars ice cream.
