The UK’s biggest grocer was cheapest in our price comparison survey, thanks to huge savings from its Clubcard Prices programme on nine of the items on our list, resulting in a £8.89 or 12% saving for members of the loyalty programme.
In total, Tesco offered the lowest price on 18 items and was exclusively cheapest for five. These included the blackberries, cod fillets, Diet Coke and rocky road cake bites.
But despite the whopping deals it was still only a narrow margin of victory – its £74.11 total was just 38p cheaper than Asda. Tesco was 4.5% cheaper year on year, while Asda’s prices were down 1.1%. However, Asda was cheapest for 19 items and exclusively so for nine, including the BrewDog Punk IPA, McCain french fries and mushrooms.
Third-placed Morrisons was £1.23 more expensive than Tesco at £75.34. It was carrying more deals that any of its rivals with a total of 14. Of these, eight were multibuys and six were straight price reductions. Three of these were exclusive to More Card holders and added to up £3.75. In total, its promos amounted to a saving of £6.40. It was also exclusively cheapest for the cheese bloomer.
Sainsbury’s Nectar members had £5.22 chopped off their total this week. However, this still left the retailer £3.60 more expensive than Tesco at £77.71. It was cheapest for 13 products and exclusively so for the black peppercorns, Dairylea Dunkers and the garlic.
Waitrose came in £8.05 more expensive than Tesco at £82.16. In terms of inflation it was 1.2% more expensive than this time last year. This week, it only matched the lowest price for one item – the Dettol bathroom wipes. It had no exclusively cheapest items.
