Morrisons was exclusively cheapest for Andrex toilet rolls this week

Morrisons came in as the cheapest retailer for the first time since July thanks to some deep discounts, including those for members of its More loyalty scheme.

At £75.54, Morrisons was £2.87 cheaper than this week’s runner-up Tesco. Morrisons had deals on 13 of the 33 items on our list – the most of any retailer. In total, it was offering discounts worth £6.84, which worked out as 8.3% off its total shopping bill.

Morrisons was cheapest for 18 items, of which seven were exclusively so. These included the Andrex toilet rolls, Lyle’s Golden Syrup, oranges and Scott’s Porage Oats.

Tesco had 10 deals this week – all exclusively for Clubcard members, who received an instant discount of £6.07. Tesco was cheapest for a dozen products but only exclusively so for the Ben & Jerry’s ice cream and Frank’s RedHot Peppersauce.

Asda, which suffered a disappointing festive trading season, was cheapest for 16 items. It was exclusively so for eight, including the Pink Lady apples and Ye Olde Oak hot dogs. However, it still came in £4.52 more expensive than leader Morrisons.

Members of Sainsbury’s Nectar scheme saved just £4 this week or 4.6% off the total bill. It came in £6.68 more expensive than Morrisons and was only exclusively cheapest for the curry powder and the white farmhouse loaf.

Waitrose was exclusively cheapest for the salmon fillets, but overall it was well off the pace. The upmarket retailer came in £12.74 more expensive than Morrisons.

Kantar this week tracked food price inflation at 3.7%. However, our basket was up just 1.6% year on year and was 2.6% cheaper than last month. Fastest-rising items were the Innocent juice, up 25% on last year, and the white loaf, which is up 24% on average.
