Morrisons has bagged its second Grocer 33 pricing victory in just three weeks, following six months without a win.
At £81.01, the Bradford-based retailer was just 25p cheaper than runner-up Tesco. On top of offering the most promotions, it was the only retailer whose total basket was cheaper than a year ago: by 7.4%.
Morrisons offered the cheapest price for 18 items and was exclusively cheapest for 10 items. These included the Fanta Lemon, Guinness, diced lamb and the soft white loaf.
Tesco came in cheapest for nine products and was exclusively so for four. These were the Dettol wipes, ginger, McVitie’s Hobnobs and the Wotsits. However, Tesco was 4.7% more expensive than in January 2023.
Third-placed Sainsbury’s came in £2.07 more expensive than Morrisons at £83.08. It was exclusively cheapest for the Liquorice Allsorts, the olives with feta and the salami & chilli pizza, and came in 0.5% more expensive year on year.
Inflation at Asda was running at 4.4% on our shopping list. It came in 38p more expensive than Sainsbury’s and £2.45 more expensive than Morrisons.
The Leeds-based retailer was exclusively cheapest for six items, including the mushrooms, Fullgreen riced cauliflower & broccoli, red potatoes and Yeo Valley milk.
While it was pretty competitive between the traditional big four supermarkets, Waitrose was a very distant fifth this week. It came in £18.84 more expensive than Morrisons at £99.85, having failed to match the lowest price for any of the items on our list.
The fluctuations in prices at the individual retailers effectively cancelled each other out in terms of overall inflation.
Prices were flat compared with last month, and were up only 1% compared with this time last year.
