Having hit the headlines this week by reducing the price of petrol to less than £1 per litre, Morrisons has also come out cheapest in the Grocer 33 pricing survey.
At £69.63, Morrisons came in £2.63 cheaper than runner-up Asda. This is the fourth win for Morrisons in the Grocer 33 year, which draws to a close next month. Its last win came on 7 March, after which Asda went on an eight-week winning streak.
Morrisons offered the lowest price on 12 products and was exclusively cheapest on eight. These included the corned beef, prawn cocktail, cheese & tomato pizza and Beet It beetroot juice. However the product that made the biggest difference was the Colgate Max White mouthwash. Its £2 offer price was £1.50 cheaper than Sainsbury’s, £1.80 cheaper than Asda and Tesco, and £1.90 cheaper than Waitrose.
This was one of nine promotions Morrisons was running on the items on our shopping list. That was one more than Waitrose while Tesco had six deals, Asda four and Sainsbury’s just three.
Despite losing out to Morrisons overall, Asda actually had the cheapest price for 16 lines, nine exclusively so. These included the Babybel minis, pak choi, sultanas and Milano salami.
Tesco took third spot this week, but at £74.49 it was almost a fiver more expensive than Morrisons. It offered the lowest price for nine lines and was exclusively cheapest for the melon, Nescafé skinny latte, pineapple and Coca-Cola.
Last week’s winner Sainsbury’s dropped down to fourth place this time round. At £76.64 it was £7.01 more expensive than Morrisons. It only offered the lowest price for three items and was exclusively cheapest for the Actimel yoghurt drink and own label Yorkshire puddings.
Waitrose was exclusively cheapest for the Amarula cream liqueur and the prepared sprouts. However, overall it came in £11.86 more expensive than Morrisons.
