Sainsbury’s was exclusively cheapest for the Cathedral City cheddar

Sainsbury’s has claimed its third pricing win of this Grocer 33 year thanks to big savings under its Nectar Prices initiative.

Members of the loyalty programme would have received a £7.15 discount – a 10.1% saving on shelf-edge prices that elevated Sainsbury’s from fourth place to top spot. With Nectar Prices, the Holborn-based retailer came in 43p cheaper than Asda at £63.52.

Sainsbury’s was also the only one of the five retailers we visited to come in cheaper than the same time last year, by 8.3%. Sainsbury’s offered the lowest price for 12 products and was exclusively cheapest for six items. These included the Bear fruit splits, Cathedral City cheddar and Evian mineral water.

Asda was cheapest for 17 items and exclusively so for 10. These included the BrewDog Hazy Jane beer, coleslaw and runner beans.

In stark contrast to Sainsbury’s, which had 11 loyalty price deals, Tesco had just two Clubcard Prices discounts. As a result, its Clubcard holders received just £1.25 off at the tills, a saving of just 1.9%.

This left Tesco £2.46 more expensive than Sainsbury’s at £65.98. It was, however, exclusively cheapest for four items: the Diet Coke, Frank’s Redhot sauce, John West tuna salad and the scotch eggs. Overall, its basket was 2.3% more expensive year on year.

While promotions at Tesco were limited, they were non-existent at Morrisons. Despite that, it was just £3 pricier than Sainsbury’s and 54p dearer than Tesco at £66.52. Morrisons was exclusively cheapest for four items, including the finger rolls and mangoes.

Waitrose came in £11.26 more expensive than Sainsbury’s at £74.78, and was 4.7% more expensive year on year. Its one highlight was coming in exclusively cheapest for the Domestos bathroom cleaner.
