Sainsbury’s was cheapest for the second time in three weeks as its Nectar members enjoyed deep discounts in our online 33 price comparison survey.
Nectar shoppers received a discount of £7.30 off their total bill, a 10.8% saving, helped by seven price-only deals. This took Sainsbury’s total down to £67.29, undercutting Asda’s basket by 52p. Sainsbury’s total was 1.8% cheaper year on year as it offered the lowest price for 12 items and was exclusively cheapest for the brioche rolls, chicken tikka masala and Innocent smoothie.
Asda was cheapest for 15 items and exclusively so for five – including the bacon lardons and Simple lotion. Its prices overall were up 7% versus October 2023, however.
Tesco, at £69.75, took third spot, £2.46 more expensive than Sainsbury’s. Its Clubcard Prices deals cut £3.05 off the bill, a saving of 4.4%. It was cheapest for 14 items, but only exclusively so for the Kikkoman soy sauce.
For the third week running, there were no promotions on our shopping list products at Morrisons. This contributed to the retailer being 3.6% more expensive year on year. However, it was still relatively competitive, coming in £3.17 pricier than Sainsbury’s at £70.46, with the New York Bagel Co bagels cheaper than rivals.
Just a penny separated our two online guest retailers. Ocado (£75.18) pipped Amazon (£75.19), though it was £7.89 dearer than Sainsbury’s.
Ocado’s basket was 1.9% cheaper than last year and it was exclusively cheapest for the Galbani blue cheese. Amazon was cheapest for five items, including the radishes, pak choi and Corona.
Waitrose was £9.40 more expensive than Sainsbury’s at £76.69, despite the highest savings (£9.35 or 12.2%). It matched the cheapest price for five items.
