Sainsbury’s claimed a second consecutive Grocer 33 pricing win and its third in four weeks.
At £68.58, it was £1.44 cheaper than nearest rival Morrisons, with its Nectar Prices initiative playing a big part in the win, with members receiving a £3.48 (or 5.1%) discount. The basket was 3.2% cheaper year on year.
Helped by six price-only deals, Sainsbury’s was cheapest for 14 items and exclusively so for six, including the long-life milk, salmon fillets and Tassimo Cadbury pods.
Members of Morrisons’ loyalty scheme enjoyed even deeper discounts. There were four special More Card prices, which added up to a £4.95 saving. These included a half-price deal for the Herbal Essences shampoo, with a price tag of £3 compared with £6 for those shopping without a More Card. This was one of four exclusively cheapest items for Morrisons.
Tesco had the smallest loyalty-based discount this time out. Clubcard shoppers would have had £2.25 chopped off their final bill. This took Tesco’s total down to £70.42, but was still £1.84 more expensive than Sainsbury’s. The UK’s biggest grocer was cheapest for 14 items and exclusively so for five.
No such loyalty prices at Asda, but the Leeds-based supermarket was still competitive. It came in £2.31 more expensive than Sainsbury’s at £70.89. It was also exclusively cheapest for five items.
Less competitive was Waitrose. The upmarket retailer was exclusively cheapest for the halloumi, but only managed to match the lowest price for two other items – the Fairy washing-up liquid and the Spontex scourers. Overall it came in £10.85 more expensive than Sainsbury’s at £79.43.
Across all five retailers, our basket was 0.7% cheaper year on year and 0.9% cheaper than last month.
