Ocado won the online G33 this week with good availability and a super-fast order time. Its “easy to navigate, easy to use” website more than made up for a carrier bag score of zero. The website made it easy to search for items and gave “clear descriptions and detailed nutritional information”.
Tesco Hainford had an even faster order time of just 17 minutes. The website was easy to navigate and had a “helpful basket display” so our shopper could see where they were up to. Clear product pictures were displayed, “as well as the type of sell-by date to expect”, which really helped in the decision-making process.
Even after a website error removed all items from the basket, our Asda Portsmouth shopper - a first-time user - still completed the shop in under 25 minutes. “The website is logically laid out, attractive and easy to read”. Asda was let down by its picker, who substituted a Spanish white wine for an Australian red.
Our Waitrose Potterspury shopper didn’t find the website intuitive. Short use-by dates on some fresh items was disappointing, as was an error on the receipt. However, offers and recipes on the website were good.
Online shopping with Morrisons Churchdown was challenging thanks to its “bland site, offering minimal alternatives when items weren’t found”. Full marks though for availability, with 33 items shopped and delivered.
Sainsbury’s Belfast had a low score on availability, and a chicken was offered up as a suitable replacement for milk. Our shopper did find the website “attractive, with a good layout” but on checkout “got stuck on a changes to promotion screen with no way out other than to remove the item”.
