This is the store’s second win in a year - what’s your secret? I’ve got some great colleagues. It was all down to them. They were absolutely delighted when I told them we’d won. Winning The Grocer 33 is a big deal for any store, so to win twice in a year is mind-blowing.
Your store got perfect scores for store standards and shop floor service. Do you offer any particular training to staff? At Cheadle we’ve been on a real journey, engaging our colleagues so that they know and share in the success of the business, and understand what we’re all about. We also spend a lot of time on colleague engagement. A number of colleagues have been promoted to team leaders or managers this year.
You also got perfect marks for availability. How do you ensure this? It’s the key to our success. Customers tell us it is one of the most important things for them when shopping, so we always make sure we are really strong on availability.
Have you had any new ranges introduced to your store recently? General merchandise and clothing is doing phenomenally well and this week the latest Gok Wan range was introduced. The store was extended 18 months ago, which allowed us to increase our non-food offer, and even though we are right next to a John Lewis it is doing exceptionally well.
Have you got any plans for non-food this year? Sainsbury’s has been rolling out a department store look to GM and clothing and we’ll be getting that.
How is Active Kids doing in your store? Every year it continues to go from strength to strength. We have lots of schools and clubs in the area so our customers love it.
And are you hoping for a good summer? The World Cup is always good for business and last time around beer, pizza and ready meals flew off the shelves. If we have good weather too, it will be even better. We’re starting to get summer ranges, like garden furniture, in now.
