Sainsburys price investment

Sainsbury’s was the cheapest retailer for our special sustainability-themed shopping basket as the cost of ethical shopping soared 9% year on year.

Our list was made up of products with at least one key eco-friendly attribute such as being organic, plant-based or coming in either easy to recycle or reduced packaging.

At £85.02, Sainsbury’s was £2.12 cheaper than Asda. It offered the lowest price for 13 products but was only exclusively cheapest for the chicken breast fillets. Asda had the lowest price for 17 lines and was exclusively cheapest for 10.

The big surprise this week was how competitive Waitrose was. It was just £2.60 more expensive than Sainsbury’s at £87.62. It was cheapest for nine lines and exclusively so for four – the Green & Black’s chocolate, Herbal Essences shampoo, salted peanuts and Ecover washing-up liquid.

The upmarket retailer’s competitiveness this week appears to have more to do with its promotional activity rather than its general pricing of green products. Waitrose had a whopping 12 deals this week with 11 of these straight price cuts.

Tesco had six price cuts – all part of its Clubcard Prices initiative. These would have saved its loyalty scheme members £4.85 and reduced Tesco’s total from £88.05 to £83.20 – making Tesco £1.82 cheaper than Sainsbury’s.

This week Morrisons announced a round of price cuts on 150 of its most popular items. But the cuts came too late to affect our survey: the Bradford-based retailer was £5.98 more expensive than Sainsbury’s at a round £91.

Morrisons was also the retailer to experience the highest level of annual inflation, with its prices up 12.9% on last year. The many deals at Waitrose meant its overall shopping cost was up just 2.4%.
