When Sainsbury’s was cheapest in our Grocer 33 price comparison last week, it was its first win since bagging two in a row in October. Well, it repeated the trick with another back-to-back victory.

At £65.07, the Holborn-based retailer came in just 69p cheaper than runner-up Asda. Sainsbury’s was cheapest for 11 products and exclusively so for six items including the Gü Sundaes, margherita pizza and Soreen malt loaf.

Sainsbury’s seems to be doing a good job keeping a lid on inflation as the cost of our basket was 0.7% cheaper year on year. However, the biggest difference for Sainsbury’s was the depth of Nectar Prices. Members of its loyalty scheme would have enjoyed a discount of £11.02.

By contrast, Asda saw the most inflation across the products on our shopping list, with its total coming in 7% more expensive year on year. Asda still managed to offer the lowest price for 13 items and was exclusively cheapest for 10.

Morrisons’ total basket was 2.5% cheaper than 12 months ago. However, it was still £1.70 more expensive than Sainsbury’s at £66.77.

Tesco was fourth on £68.81. This was £3.74 more expensive than Sainsbury’s and there was a notable difference in the savings available to members of its loyalty scheme. Clubcard holders would only have seen £3.55 taken off their bill. The upshot was that Tesco was 0.6% more expensive year on year.

Waitrose prices were down 0.4% versus last year and it was exclusively cheapest for the Dettol wipes, gammon steaks and tomatoes. However, the upmarket retailer still came in £15.43 more expensive than Sainsbury’s.

In terms of overall inflation our shopping list was on average 0.8% more expensive compared to a year ago but also 2.6% cheaper than last month.
