How does it feel to have won? The team is overwhelmed. The store has had two consecutive years of growth and we’re so pleased with this recognition.
You’ve worked at Sainsbury’s since 1986. What has changed in that time? There are lots of discounters to contend with now, which means Sainsbury’s has to drive its efficiency and be even more competitive on price.
Why have you stayed with Sainsbury’s for so long? I love the family feel of Sainsbury’s. It offers plenty of career progression - I’ve worked my way up from a trainee manager and had time across almost every store department. I’ve also mentored a few employees along the way, which is very rewarding.
Are there any new additions you would like for the store? We’re a one-stop shop that offers enough variety to suit different shoppers. We’ve got an in-store Argos which has had a halo effect and brought great growth for us. Other concessions we have are a Lloyd’s Pharmacy, Jessops and Timpson, alongside meat, fish and deli counters. I’d love a sushi counter, but there isn’t a massive interest in it from our customer demographic.
What do you think of the updated Smart Shop trial at North Clapham Station Local? It’s exciting - around 80% of people have smartphones now so it makes sense.
Has your store been hit by CO2 shortages? There has been a clear shortfall in carbonated drinks but we’re about 70% of the way back to normal levels. We’ve had no complaints from customers though, as we still offer lots of choice and have informed them about the issues.
Have customers’ attitudes to plastic packaging changed? There’s been a definite switch since Blue Planet II aired. I’ve seen more customers purchasing loose produce since then.
How have staff reacted to the merger with Asda? There is some excitement from employees but their focus is on their jobs day to day.
