Your store scored full marks for shop floor service - how? I have 450 really well-engaged, inspirational colleagues. We always aim to be the best in town by giving world-class service. We have many competitors close by but if we do a great job, our customers will keep coming back.
Our shopper was impressed with your counters. What work have you done on these? All our counter colleagues are trained at our counter college in Bradford and we have a lot of coaching. We try to make them a destination - especially the fish counter where we sell every line available in Sainsbury’s. Sales are in massive growth.
You also had a good availability score. What work have you done on this? We’ve worked with our logistics teams to change a lot of the delivery times and in some cases bring them forward by 12 or 24 hours.
Have you had any new developments recently? Last year, we upgraded GM and clothing to give it a department store look and feel. Before, GM and clothing was on grocery shelves, but now they are on lower shelves in a dedicated area.
What have you got planned for this year? We’re planning to double the capacity of our online operation so we can future-proof ourselves for further growth. We’re also planning to improve the car park.
What’s your view on the current state of the UK grocery market? It is more competitive than it has ever been. At Sainsbury’s we have been working on price by focusing on value simplicity. We’ve launched a big campaign and customers really get it judging by the numbers we are starting to turn over for the products we have changed the price of.
What work do you do with the local community? We work with three local charities. We will have raised £10,000 for Kirkwood Hospice this year through a number of events. We also work with the Welcome Centre, which supports people in crisis, and also Huddersfield Town’s breakfast club.
