Congratulations. How did the festive season go at your store? When your mystery shopper came we would have been still in full flow. When you work down south the busy time is up until Boxing Day and then it’s pretty much finished but up here we’re only at the halfway point. It still feels like we’re in it.
So your customers still throw themselves into the Hogmanay spirit? Yes, it’s still absolutely massive for us. As soon as Boxing Day is over it’s all about people stocking up for their Hogmanay parties.
A good time to have just relaunched your beers, wines and spirits aisle then? It’s been vastly positive for us and increased availability in store and for the dotcom customers. It’s made the offer less confusing. I’ve been here three years and it’s never been such a big driver for us in terms of footfall.
What drinks have been selling well over the festive season? We’ve sold a huge amount of malt whisky, because it also works well as a gift, and Prosecco is continuing to sell well. Having said that, we’ve sold an awful lot of Champagne at some very competitive prices.
Competition on prices has been brutal over Christmas. How have you fared? I think we’ve been as competitive on price as I’ve ever seen in my career. The Brand Guarantee has been a game-changer for us.
How is the store tapping into the ‘new year, new you’ trend? We are the number one F&F store in the company and one of the things that stands out is a specialist keep fit area for male and female clothing and footwear. We also have a standalone Nutricentre, which is proving very popular as people look to their new year resolutions.
Is it the end of the all the partying then? No, we have Burns Night coming up at the end of the month and we have all sorts planned with free tasting of local food and entertainment.
