turkey in shopping basket

The average price of a frozen turkey was 7% cheaper year on year

It was cheapest for Halloween and now Tesco has done it again for the first of our two Christmas Grocer 33 baskets.

This week’s basket was made up of food, drink and other seasonal items for shoppers looking to do Christmas on a budget. At £108.39, Tesco came in £6.89 cheaper than runner-up Asda and was the only grocer in our price comparison survey to be cheaper than last year, with prices down £1.39 (-1.3%).

The UK’s biggest grocer had its Clubcard Prices initiative to thank for the victory as members of its loyalty scheme enjoyed a saving of almost 25%. This equated to an instant discount of £26.83 at the checkout. Tesco was cheapest for 15 items and exclusively so for four – the bacon, Celebrations, pork chipolatas and satsumas.

Asda was exclusively cheapest for the blue stilton, Canti prosecco, Christmas crackers and mince pies.

Third-placed Sainsbury’s was offering a 20% discount for Nectar members – and offered the cheapest price on the turkey – but came in £8.07 more expensive than Tesco at £116.46. Morrisons’ More Card was also to the fore as loyalty members saved £16.44. However, its total was £9 more than Tesco at £117.39.

There was then a massive gap to Waitrose, which came in £41.34 more expensive than Tesco at £149.73.

Amid fierce competition our basket was 1.5% more expensive than in December 2023. The best news for shoppers was that the frozen turkey crown was 7% cheaper year on year. The smoked salmon also fell 6% and the pork chipolatas were down 5%. The biggest faller was the cheddar & onion crisps, 9% cheaper than last Christmas.

On the flip side, the price of the vegetable spring rolls rose 29% while the extra virgin olive oil and double cream increased by 24% and 20% respectively. There were also double-digit percentage increases for the kitchen foil (18%), mince pies (15%) and parsnips (13%).
