Tesco took its first win of the calendar year this week, having last tasted victory in both of our Christmas dinner baskets in December.
This week was an online Super 33 shop, featuring Amazon and Ocado. But it was traditional big four duo Tesco and Asda that slugged it out for the win.
At £78.59, Tesco came in just 42p cheaper than its Leeds rival. Our shopping at Tesco was actually 3.5% more expensive year on year – in the week that the official ONS UK inflation rate increased to 3% – but Clubcard Prices discounts of almost a tenner, saving Clubcard holders 12.4% versus the shelf-edge prices for our shopping list, secured the victory. Tesco was exclusively cheapest for five items, including the Boursin cheese, Domestos, Doritos and Lynx body spray.
Asda’s prices, on the other hand, were up 2.8% compared with February 2024, despite being exclusively cheapest for a dozen items.
Morrisons took third spot with a tight grip on inflation. Its £82.37 basket was just 0.6% more expensive than 12 months ago. But it was £3.78 more expensive than Tesco.
Ocado was the only retailer whose basket was cheaper year on year. Down 0.3% versus last February, it came in £5.48 more expensive than Tesco at £84.07, winning the battle of the guest retailers (not including delivery).
Amazon’s £84.73 total was £6.14 more than Tesco. But the online giant suffered the most inflation of any of the retailers this week at 4.6%.
There was just 5p between Amazon and Sainsbury’s, but the £84.78 was £6.19 more expensive than Tesco.
Waitrose was £10.04 more expensive than Tesco at £88.63.
Across the seven retailers, prices were up by just 2.2% year on year. Prices were down the same percentage vs last month.
