On this Saturday afternoon shop, Waitrose Cirencester claimed a narrow victory thanks to helpful shop floor staff (they gave alternative suggestions when an item our shopper was searching for couldn’t be found, while the store manager helped with stock-checking out the back) and good availability.
Morrisons High Wycombe was refurbished only a couple of years ago and still seemed “fresh”. There were lots of good offers but a lack of availability, with four items not stocked and two out of stock, cost it dear. Our mystery shopper also noted a wide range of store extras (“ride-on toys, taxi phone, dry cleaning and even glass hire for parties”).
Narrow aisles and high shelves made it difficult for our Asda shopper to navigate but “very friendly staff” helped find and reach for items. Availability was poor but our shopper was impressed by the large selection of sausages for only 24p each!
Sainsbury’s East Kilbride had a “confusing car park, with pay machines difficult to find”. This was also a smaller Sainsbury’s with a limited range and though “quiet”, the layout was less than ideal for a big shop. But shop floor service was excellent, as was the checkout experience, with lots of tills manned and no queues.
Tesco Ledbury made a bad first impression with “a lot of litter, product packaging and cardboard” in the car park. The store was tidier, though items on promotion proved difficult to find as they had been moved from their usual positions. And staff were difficult to find on the shop floor and not terribly helpful once found.
